Why HTML isn’t programming

Recently, while browsing a certain forum, I have noticed that a lot of people think of HTML as a programming language. This is not the case. There are some significant differences between the markup language HTML and your generic programming language. First and foremost, programming languages are used to create programs, i.e. applications that can be run and interacted with. Markup languages like HTML on the other hand cannot be run and interacted with, they only display information. Granted, you might feel like you are programming when you sit there and create yourfancy web page and insert divs and paragraphs everywhere, but you’re not. You are merely marking up the text you write so that browsers can interpret this and display it in a suitable manner. Bottom line is, as long as you stick to HTML and CSS, you’re not a programmer. So don’t call yourself one.
